Travelling with toddlers and teens might sound too hard or no fun or scary, but it's wonderful, for you and your children. Just try it - you'll love it!

Down the Mississippi - Cleveland to New Orleans

2012 - From Cleveland to New Orleans

A southern road trip and one of my favourites. Despite short 3-4 hour drives in between stops, each city has its own unique flavour.

Our itinerary - Cleveland, Louisville, Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans and back.

Summary - 14 days, 6,000 km in my little VW Golf.

Ages - 14, 11 and 7

Highlights - the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, horseback riding across the green pastures of Kentucky, exploring Mammoth Cave (3rd longest in the world - now we've done the 2nd, 3rd and 4th!), shopping for cowboy boots and eating Nashville barbeque, visiting the Nashville Parthenon (created a century ago for a world's fair), eating Memphis barbeque, loving Graceland, a picnic by the Mississippi, having ice cream in Arkansas so we can add it to our list, our great little cottage in New Orleans, exploring the market in the French Quarter, touring the Mardi Gras floats on a rainy day, going on a swamp boat tour and petting an alligator!, visiting Oak Alley Plantation, eating fried everything - fish, shrimps, clams, alligator, fries, hushpuppies; wondering at the huge hotels right on the beach in Mississippi (where they get hurricanes!), giving out free hugs in Alabama.
